Pineapple Exress

Starring: Seth Rogen, James Franco
Director: David Gordon Green
Rating: Loved It

Take a case of mistaken identity drug dealer action flick and add the Apatow Crew twist, and you've got Pineapple Express

This is one of the first movies I've watched in a long time that actually delivered what I expected and then some.  I didn't watch this one expecting a piece of cinematic excellence, and if you did, you need to get out more often.  This was a laugh-a-minute comedy delivered in a style that director Judd Apatow and crew created with 40-Year-Old Virgin and had perfected by Knocked Up if not before that with Superbad

It's simple: Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) witnesses a murder while on his way to serve a drug dealer with papers.  The only place he knows to run is to the home of his pot dealer Saul Silver (James Franco).  Hilarity ensues of course as the pair out run the bad cops and bad guys in general all the while dragging Dale's girlfriend and her family and Saul's drug middle man into the chase.

The best parts of the movie play out early as we get to see Saul and Dale begin to bond, but the "final showdown" takes the cake for most memorable scene.  Forget all the crazy action scenes from Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and Rush Hour you've seen over the years.  The final shoot out in Express is the most outrageously, ridiculously unbelievable action sequence to ever be produced...but that's what makes it shine.  Just to see a Franco character take on a female cop (Rosie Perez) is joy in its self.

Franco is just one of many being swept up in the giant net that is the Apatow family.  Between producing, directing and writing, Apatow has met with the likes of Jim Carey, Will Ferrell, the Wilson brothers and more.  Now, with Rogen costarring in Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri and Apatow crossing hairs with the Happy-Madison bunch, I can't wait to see what the future holds.  The future of comedy looks very bright with Judd's net catching up the hottest talent in the business.
