Captain American: The First Avenger

Starring: Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Hugo Weaving
Directed by: Joe Johnston
Rating: Loved It

When it comes to prices for land and realty, it's all about location, location, location.  Well, in my opinion, there is one thing that is making the Marvel movies great: casting, casting, casting.  The first great casting job I really remember was way early on with the X-Men titles.  All of the casting was good, but when somebody said "Kelsey Grammer should play Beast", I was on board 100%.  Given, the Marvel company isn't risky with its casting - as say Christopher Nolan was sticking Heath Ledger in as Joker - I still think they do a great job.  Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Ed Norton (although not reprising his role) as Bruce Banner, and even smaller parts like Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Chester Phillips in the new Cap movie are all played so well by the actors.

With that said, here's a little run down of the plot in case you don't know what's up.  Steve Rogers is a scrawny, sickly kid that wants to join the military.  He is rejected over and over (after falsifying his enlistment cards sevearl times) until he is finally given the chance to join a new program by Dr. Erskine (perfectly played by Stanley Tucci).  He joins this program and becomes the first and (due to some German interference) only one of a breed of new super soldier.  After being injected with the super soldier serum developed by Dr. Erskine (with some help from Howard Stark...that's Tony's dad), Rogers becomes Captain America and leads the fight against HYDRA and the Red Skull, possibly the only WWII villain that rivals Hitler.

Dr. Erskine picks Rogers because her realizes it is not strength of body that they must find, but strength of character, heart and mind.  Rogers is all three of these things.  Even when he is a scrawny wimp, he stands up for what he believes and wants nothing more than to fight for his country.  After becoming Captain America, he can do just that better than anyone.  He is not insanely fast like the Hulk, nor is he super fast like Flash, but he is definitely a different breed of man.

The acting all around in the film is great.  The 3D worked really well here, too.  I usually am not a fan of 3D, but there were definitely some effects in there that were worth having.  One shield throw in particular during one of the last battles made me jump.  The best thing - next to the casting of course - was that the movie made Cap everything I wanted him to be.  He is a true American that stands up for what he believes, is honest and knows right from wrong and is willing to fight for it.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ABOUT CAPS STORY

If you don't know, Cap gets frozen at the end of WWII and is lost for some time.  He is later thawed and brought back to life in modern times.  We get to see this near the end of the film.  Sam Jackson's Nick Fury makes his usual appearance, and after the credits roll, we get to see the earliest teaser for next year's Avengers.  I can't remember the last time I was so excited about a movie.  Joss Whedon is behind the wheel on that one; so, I'm not worried at all.
