Paranormal Activity 3

Starring: Chloe Csengery, Jessica Tyler Brown, Christopher Nicholas Smith
Directed by: Henry Joost & Arial Schulman
Rating: I Really Liked It

The Good:

  • Even though we see the some of the same tricks we saw in the first two movies, they're still creepy as ever and are mixed well with some new stuff, too.
  • The genius of the auscultating fan as a camera stand to survey a large area.  Every time that camera auscultates from one direction to another, you're holding your breath in anticipation.
  • The acting in this was pretty good from all parties involved.  I usually don't like child actors, but both of the girls in this one are convincing.
  • Dustin Ingram is great in this.  He's a somewhat minor character, but he plays the role well.
  • Not much of anything that was in the trailers for the movie was repeated in the actual film.
The Bad:
  • The first one here is the same as the first one "The Good" list: some of the same tricks.  Some of them worked well, but some of them were exactly the same as before.
  • I didn't much care for how passive Dennis (Smith), the stepfather, was about trying to get Julie (Lauren Bittner), the mother, to watch the tapes.  None of the things that he caught on film could be dismissed as something other than what they were.
The Ugly:
  • I didn't care for the ending.  I won't talk about it, but I thought part of it was kind of cheap.  It was partially an easy way out of a plot hole.
